Health care reform has long been packaged as beneficial to all Americans, so it is not surprising that it contains provisions that will be to the benefit of the  community.

One of the basic things that health care reform will be able to offer to the LGBT community is lower costs for health care. The Medicaid program will be expanded to be available to more Americans, which will increase access to quality health care for low-income adults, including those who may be suffering from HIV/AIDS.

There will be support for health care coverage for those who will opt for early retirement through a $5 billion financial assistance towards employer health plans. As in other groups of Americans, the LGBT community will be able to benefit as health care reform opens up more choices in terms of health care coverage for all Americans. The ban on discrimination being placed on insurance companies will ensure that no one will suffer from denial from health care coverage regardless of their age or gender or the fact that they have pre-existing medical conditions.

Health care reform will also ensure that the LGBT community is guaranteed the availability of choices of quality health care and affordable health care coverage, even if they suddenly lose their jobs, change their jobs, move, or become sick or indisposed. This will be made possible through the creation of the state-based insurance exchanges.

In addition, consumers who acquire new health plans will be assured of access to an independent appeals process where they can appeal decisions made by their health insurance provider.
