Elmo Helps Secretary Sebelius Promote Flu Protection

One of the things that the new health care reform places importance in is preventive care, in recognition of the fact that prevention is better than having to manage treatment. It is therefore not a surprise that Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services, is taking an active part in reminding people about preventive care. In a recent event, Secretary Sebelius was joined by Elmo, that lovable character from the Sesame Street, to disseminate information on how families can stay protected against the flu during flu season.

A post on HealthCare.gov by Jenny Backus, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, shared that Secretary Sebelius, accompanied by friends, paid a visit to the Northside Center for Child Development in New York City.

Among those who were with Secretary Sebelius was Elmo, who came all the way from Sesame Street. Kids joined in on a hand washing demo with Elmo and Secretary Sebelius. Representatives from the Ad Council and the New York City Health Department were also on hand to give reminders on how to keep healthy during flu season.

Here are some tips:

• Like Elmo, wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you sneeze. (You can also use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.)
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you’re sick, limit contact with others as much as possible, and stay home until at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever or signs of a fever.
